Introduction

OfCourse you must have suffered at least once in your lifetime with dandruff. It’s just a normal buildup on our scalp and will not last long with proper maintenance and some key products. In this case to be honest, you can get the power of products even in home remedies, yeah, there are some very powerful products which works against dandruff in your kitchen and garden.

Disclaimer

I have only suggested products which I have used personally and yielded me good results. I’m not a dermatologist, and these suggestions are in no way a substitute of professional guidance.

Products

First let’s start from products which I have used. I would say that you can never find an ingredient better than these two for dandruff, #1 Ketoconazole #2 Salicylic Acid (low concentration). Ketoconazole is a well-known ingredient used for fungal acne, which is also somehow a result of dandruff, widely available in shampoo formulations.

You can go for a good 1 to 2% ketoconazole shampoo at the beginning and only when you find the product less concentration for the intensity of dandruff you have, slightly increase the dosage under a professional guidance.

I personally found the Nizoral shampoo from Amazon USA very effective when used once a week until the dandruff goes away. For preventing dandruff, I continue using it once a month. The best alternative in Indian market is the Danfree 2% shampoo, you will only need a very little shampoo even if your hair is long. Make sure to dilute the shampoo and use it on wet hair.

And the second would be the combination of salicylic acid along with niacinamide (Both with very low concentration). You can easily find the combination of these two actives in an anti-dandruff hair mask. One which I use is the Bare Anatomy Anti-Dandruff Hair Mask, works really good for minimal dandruff which I usually get 3 days post hair wash.

Unfortunately, I could find the mask on the us store, but found its shampoo from the same range, will share it with you.

I will just apply it on damp hair for minimum of 30 minutes and will wash it off with luke warm water. Sometimes when I feel the dandruff itchier, I will mix few drops (3 to 4) of Minimalist 10% niacinamide serum and will apply it as usual.

There are two more hair products which I have used and just loved their results, will also share them beneath.

The ketoconazole shampoo should be used only once a week, since it tends to dry out your hair and scalp. When used regularly, it will dry your scalp out and that dryness will further trigger more dandruff.

So, what shampoo should I use on the other days of the week?

One shampoo which my dermatologist suggested was the Head and Shoulders anti-dandruff and anti-hair fall shampoo. I also used Love Beauty and Planet anti dandruff shampoo, both were almost similar, so you can use anything of your choice.

Home Remedies

Now coming to the home remedies, before getting into what to use, let me first tell you what not to use on your scalp when you have dandruff,

  • Do not use any kind of oils, I found a lot of articles telling to use oils when you have dandruff. Personally, I found, some oil stays on our scalp and it triggers more dandruff.
  • Do not use honey or anything like baking powder or soda, these basically alters the pH level of your scalp and are not made exclusively to be used on scalp.
  • Be it any mask you prepare, never add citrus to your mix like lemon or sweet lemon.
  • Do add any forms of sugar, honey, any fruits or even direct white sugar.

Now let’s get into the dos of dandruff hair care.

Hair Mask

#1 mask is Aloevera Gel plus Turmeric. You can use any clear aloe vera gel available in the market, I personally love the Vilvah Aloe Vera Gel. Or if you have access to fresh aloe leaves, get one, remove its peel thoroughly and cut them into pieces.

Ayurvedic tradition says to wash aloe vera 7 times in water and then put some in your mixer jar and add a pinch of cooking turmeric powder. Make sure to use the purest turmeric from reputed brands. Aloevera is known for its cooling properties, so it is advised to use this mask in summer and do not keep it for more than 5 minutes. Wash the gel using very mind shampoo.

#2 is the Neem Mask. Here, more than leaves, the bark is very important, get some neem raw barks and soak it overnight. Next day get some neem leaf powder or leaves add it to mixer jar along with the water you soaked the barks. If you feel like adding anything to make it thicker, you can add some mehndi leaves (make sure to add only little since it is pigmented) or some aloe gel.

Hair Spray

#3 is going to be a spray, which use can literally use regularly on your scalp. There are 3 best ingredients, you can use any one or if possible, go and use all 3.

  • First and always the best would be tea tree oil, you will not need a lot, since it is an essential oil and has heavy fragrance, just add 2 to 3 drops to hot water and keep until cold and transfer it to a spray bottle and use it.
  • Second is Rosemary, if you get fresh herb boil it until the water goes half, let it cool and transfer to a spray bottle and use.
  • Third is neem oil, go for any cold pressed pure neem oil. You can even use neem leaves, when using oil add only 3 to 4 drops in 100ml hot water and use. If leaves or powder, add it to 200ml boiling water and wait until it goes half, cool and transfer it to a spray bottle and use.
